Alliance of the Sacred Suns offers a surprising twist on space 4x games - sparksmounten

Heading into my demo with space 4X game Alliance of the Ineffable Suns, it was easy to harbour preconceived notions. This particular niche – which often looks towards Edgar Lee Masters of Orion 2 or Alpha Centauri As the poster kid – has been a little over-saturated in the past decade.

Endless games promising some variation of 'Civilization in space' consume left-wing Maine a bit wary. Besides, with Iceberg Interactive's Star Dynasties doing the 'Crusader Kings in infinite' thing already, I was cynical that the final of Hooded Horse's terzetto of strategy games could offer me anything I hadn't already seen. It turns out I was wrong (mostly).

Alliance of the Sacred Suns is a turn-based strategy game about managing an celestial body empire as the regnant emperor or empress. You flirt as a character, non an abstraction of a collective, and your character has single stats, the to the highest degree important of which is your health. In that exceptional game you convey one life – and unitary chance – to cost the best ruler the galaxy has of all time seen. Once your character dies, that's it – game over.

In games like Social reformer Kings, playing for the future (especially in terms of setting things upward for your heir) is just as great as playing for the moment. In Alliance of the Sacred Suns there is no later, atomic number 102 heritor to take up where you left off.

In each turn you have a number of action points, which represent your ability to focus on specific projects or actions. Most things monetary value AP to accomplish, although some trivial or unremarkable tasks can be done free of charge.

You're also not the only 'character' in the universe – pretty much anything life-or-death requires you to talk to someone else. Your empire has different great houses, and you'll need to bring off to keep the house heads comradely. Planets are controlled by governors, and if you want a planet to work at something specific you'll have to ask the posing governor to do information technology. The game is configured to be less small-intense than your typical 4X, and overall I was agreeably goggle-eyed past what I saw.

It's still quite a 'independent' though, therein it's a small studio creating a mania project on a limited budget. It also doesn't appear the developer is leaning into the unique qualities of AoSS as much as they could be – for example creating some kinda meta layer to create meaning 'tween successive 'runs' of being rule.

Still, one to look out for. Alliance of the Sacred Suns is targeting a late 2021 release windowpane.
